Hurricane Relief in Puerto Rico

In Jessica Taylors article about Trump and hurricane Maria relief in Puerto Rico titled: " Trump Touts Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico: ‘We’ve Saved a Lot of Lives’ " from npr.org  is a very subjective article. The title alone will inform you that this is a subjective article from the word ‘Touts’ which means to speak of better than the situation actually is. In the first paragraph Taylor says ‘but as soon as he stepped off the plane, the president was in a self-congratulatory mood. And later in the article she includes a strong quote from San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz “sometimes his style of communication gets in the way, it goes to prove a lack of sensibility.” Which is subjective language.

A good point Taylor had was on page four she mentioned that trump was joking on the matter of the costs the island’s devastation is adding to the U.S. deficit. there is a lot of subjective language in the article. From the word ‘touts’ in the title to some of the locals of Puerto Rico with signs that said, “Proud Americans” also with signs that said, “Let’s make Puerto Rico Great Again” and “God bless You Mr. President.” I do not agree with the author Jessica Taylor, or the mayor of San Juan Carmen Yulin Cruz, on their views of trump and his relief in Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria. Taylor included quotes from president Trump in which Trump states “what is your death count as of this moment?” asked to local officials’ Trump continues and says “17? 16 people certified, 16 people versus in the thousands.” Which makes sense in my mind Katrina had a record of at least 1,800 deaths in August of 05. Cruz is quoted saying “sometimes his style of communication gets in the way, it goes to prove his lack of sensibility.” To say that president Trump is “lacking in sensibility” in my opinion this is not true, if president Trump was lacking in sensibility he doubtfully would have gone to Puerto Rico. Later Trump asks some locals “you always come back” in response one of the men in the family said, “Puerto Rico is Puerto Rico.” In response to another family who had been trapped in their home since the last hurricane, which was Irma, “you know who helped them? God helped them” personally I feel that if someone (especially someone in power) stops to interact with victims of a natural disaster and mentions God, that person is not a person who is lacking in sensibility.

  1. I am gleeful during Trumps visit to Puerto Rico on October 3, 2017 , that he reassured Puerto Rico residences, "that the government would support them". "The storm wrecked the island's infrastructure" . Maybe now, Trump and San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz , will focus on "making Puerto Rico great again".

  2. Hey Adam, I agree with you ! I do not think Trump would have stopped what he is doing to go to Puerto Rico if he was not sensible. I like how you introduced your topic and gave supporting evidence behind everything you said. the only thing i saw wrong was you didn't capitalize Trumps name but we all make mistakes so overall good response to your article.
